A web hosting service allows organizations as well as individuals to enable other people access their websites through the World Wide Web (www). Companies that provide this service are known as web hosts.

Types of hosting: Grid or Cloud hosting

This is type of hosting that allows many individual servers to work together such that it appears like there is one main server .As the need for hosting services grows, a hosting company can get additional commodity hardware to create a larger cloud or grid.

All computing packages use pricing structures known as the pay for what you use. Clients may be charged for extra memory usage, bandwidth, CPU processing and any other usage of resources.

Cloud hosting is provided by companies such as Amazon. The Elastic Compute Cloud provided by Amazon is not paid for a minimum monthly fee by clients.

Shared Hosting

This is a type of hosting where a website hosted by one server is shared by several other websites .This sharing reduces the costs that one incurs to maintain such kind of a set up , for instance , one may only be required to pay about ten dollars every month when they share a super server with many websites .

Shared hosting however is disadvantageous because it puts one under the mercy of the other website being hosted on the server. A website that is very popular can affect an individual’s website performance in terms of traffic.

If an individual has a popular site, they are able to use the super server at a lower price than if their site was unpopular.

Virtual Private Server (VPS)

Such a server usually shares a single physical server but appears like several distinct servers.Though VPS shares hardware resources, each is allocated a particular part of the resources used for computing.

A Virtual Private server helps reduce the cost that one incurs for having a dedicated server. It can also eliminate problems that can arise if the other website’s owners bring down an individual’s website.

Self Service Hosting

This is a hosting plan that gives one total control over the server .An individual purchases servers, configures and installs software and provides cooling and power systems.

Colocation

This type of hosting involves an individual renting rack space provided by a data center. One then brings their server hardware and provides physical security , internet link up as well as cooling systems .They are thus responsible for their own data storage , backup procedures and software among others .

Most small businesses may not find Colocation convenient for their operations. This is because it requires a lot of investment in terms of money, time and personnel.

Reseller Hosting

This is a type of hosting which is typically shared hosting but contains several extra tools which help one to resell their hosting space.

Reseller hosting has greater control technically through a control panel of Web Host Manage. It also has extra perks as well as billing software that can be convenient for one who has invoice clients.

Extra perks provided include private name servers, technical support for white label as well as free website templates.
